There are several films that deserve to be watched more than once. There are others worth hardly see them finish first, even ... but also those with a good half and not so good.
A film may be advisable to at least be good from start to finish but we know that not always happens. I have a list of movies with a strong first and second part, which I always prefer to see one more than the other. An example is the Best Impossible, this is a movie that I like it in its entirety but it has two clearly marked, the first where he builds the characters from their worst moments and the second starts with the trip, where things are resolved. The first is my favorite and could repeat it 10 times more than the second, but always look full.
With Apocalypto something strange happens to me ... Almost can not stand the first half of the movie (except for the first 5 minutes) but I'm excited to see several times in the second half. I think we could even say that these are two different movies in various aspects.
This film, like several of Mel Gibson, generated much controversy around the issue of America's native peoples and how they are shown in Apocalypto, as well as their level of crudity, loosely historical, etc. I think no one could say that the blood-loving friend Mel, do not put any meat on the grill when he shoots a film. Then we can agree on them, we always major productions, well filmed, with a good job of setting, staging and other minor details not like the use of the original languages. However, in my opinion, the deployment of scripts to generate controversy, is what I like least about their products and do not think it's something minor.
In Apocalypto see a top 5 or 10 minutes where presented The Jaguar Paw's tribe protagonist, living in peace but with a feeling that something is about to happen. After those 10 minutes, passing what he sensed ... That the film comes in a climate of violence and torture in the style Mel, set in a framework that changes from green jungle and home to an unfriendly desert man. Then comes the big city with painted white men and a lot of dryness around. As in any big city (including pre-Columbian), many people and much confusion.
All this is what prevails in the first half of the film. Here we do not finish you understand what's happening but we do not hooked much with this semi-mystery. There is a compelling story to invite to see such a scenario bleak and cruel.
From a concrete fact that Jaguar Paw lives, begins the second half of this movie but you could say we're talking about almost any other film. The only thing that has continuity with the first half, is 30% of the characters and I think nothing more ... Since then there is another scenario, other colors, another way of filming. This second part is a story as simple as a chase, but that simplicity does not allow you take off the screen during the 30 minutes it lasts.
Here we see a lush forest, full of life and danger but not for those who can live in it. We see this little man running through the jungle on a frantic but with a plan. Behind him we see his pursuers, like poor tireless Jaguar Paw, with the sole purpose of catching the guy and kill him, obviously. While there is cruelty, persecution is part of this almost endless and, as viewers, we understand it in any other action film where what prevails is the adrenaline. No matter where it comes.
As you can see, in the second half, Mel is stripped of the issue historically, socially, politically incorrect or correct, the controversy is far from relaxing in the hands of Hollywood and allows the film to entertain, period.
I've seen that second half, several times, no matter what is shown above. That other half was almost unbearable until I saw her for the first time. If the film had a letter, I would only half portion of Apocalypto (the good half portion, of course).
